She was contacted to see if there was a need for volunteers for the GIFT program this year in Anchorage. She needed volunteers for Sunday, December 18, 2005, from 8:30am-12:00pm. An e-mail was sent out to the interest group members to see if anyone was interested. Three students signed up.
What Went Well: One member couldn’t make it – she was sick. We arrived at 8:30am were we received an orientation about what our responsibilities were. We would be escorting a parent of a low-income family to the toy section and help them pick out toys for their children. We were also responsible for carrying their toys to the next station. These toys were donated through the Toys for Tots Toy Drive in Anchorage. It is fortunate that so many people in the community donated toys for this great event. Parents were very grateful for our services and the generosity of the community. This was a great service project and a lot of fun.

We signed up to help volunteer. This is a student run organization at the University that is working with Solace international who has already built one school for girls in Afghanistan.
What Went Well: We tabled the fundraising event by helping serve popcorn and informing students that passed by about the service project. We also help collect donations from people who sponsored girls in Afghanistan by donating money to fund their school supplies, desk, etc. Some donated money to build the school. A project in the future will be helping to staple the raffle tickets and help sell them to raise money for the Afghanistan School for Girls. Students, including our participants, helped collect $1500 over three days.

Planning Steps to Accomplish Event: The Anchorage Chinese Association were in need for volunteers to design and implement carnival booths. I decided to organize a face painting and spin art booth. I purchased face painting pallets & brushes, as well as a spin art machine and kit. I also made face painting guides and pictures for the volunteers to follow.
What Went Well: We arrived early to set up tables and chairs for our face painting booth. I was able to gather people to volunteer to run the spin art booth while APO members ran the face painting booth. Children really enjoyed our artwork. Some parents even had their faces painted.
What we could Improve On: More face painters would have been helpful!
